  • Gameloft has launched a new game earlier this year, one called Age of Sparta, your typical freemium city builder, but with a twist. That twist is the historic period when the game’s events take place: which is ancient Sparta.

We played the game on the Huawei Honor 6 handset and it felt a lot like a combination of Ikariam and World at Arms, with the latter contributing with the fight system. You will build and upgrade a Spartan town/fortress, that includes the usual barracks, temples, statues and buildings that allow you to implement various upgrades. There’s PvP here and obviously an energy system in place.

There are timers for building stuff and lots of fighters to train, most of them mythical creatures you’d find in the legends of Hercules. You can build a wheat farm, vineyard or quarry to earn gold and you can also rob players after fighting in a turn based display of power. There you simply have to wait for units to attack, after arranging them on the “board”.

Battle points are also available and there’s even a Campaign Mode, serving like practice for PvP battles and offering you enough rewards to level up faster. You can train slingers, Satyres, gorgons and more creatures and I have to say that the buildings are nice looking. IAPs go up to 99 dollars and you’ll even run into Xerses and other ancient history rulers.

You can combine units for more powerful creatures and collect gems to unlock further upgrades easier. New land has to be bought in order to build various constructions and you’ll be able to call the power of Zeus, Hades or Poseidon for your aid. This was a fun game to play and the freemium aspect didn’t slow us down one bit. We give it a 9 out of 10 and you can download it here.
