  • Guardians of the Galaxy is certainly the biggest blockbuster movie this summer and it couldn’t lack an accompanying game. It’s called Guardians of the Galaxy The Universal Weapon and it’s more related to the comics than the actual movie. You’ll play as Star Lord and his mates, who are searching for the universal weapon.

The game is priced at $3, down from $5 and this title comes from Marvel Games. We played it on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and I have to say from the start that it feels like a combo of Star Wars Assault Team and Angry Birds Epic. The good news is that there’s no in app purchase here or Internet connection required. You play as Star Lord, Gamora, Groot, Rocket and Drax, the great characters of the movie and you can also unlock a total of 25 characters from the GoG universe, even villains.

Those are only playable in the Arena mode, which is sort of a survival mode. The main story is delivered through comic book style sequences and includes around 60 levels to play with. The main villain is Ronan the Accuser and the aim here is to gather 5 pieces of the universal weapon. You can customize a team of 4 characters, level them up, attach crystals and weapons to their slots, plus increase their skills.

Some skills require two characters to be in the region to trigger a more powerful attack. The gameplay feels like Angry Birds Epic, in that you need to drag and drop from a character to a foe to attack or to an ally to heal or boost its status. There are also traps included in the levels, that you can use to your advantage in fights. Some characters have ranged attacks and other have melee attacks, so it’s best to match up a good formation each time.

The game is fun, cartoonish and filled with Marvel content, but there’s a bit of lack of appeal of the fights, that feel very repetitive. We give it an 8.2 out of 10 and you can download it here.
