  • As some are aware portable consoles are rapidly losing market share due to the developers focusing on smartphone and tablets apps. However there are still titles that most enthusiasts would like to play. And that without paying for the expensive console and then once more for the game itself. Well in this case the highly compatible app I’m about to write about is a real jewel.

Though still not quite stable PSP Emulator for Android has reached a state where almost anyone can test it. It is compatible with any device Android 4.0+ and even x86 CPUs. PPSSPP – as the title is called currently offers only a few titles for playing but the final release is not at all that far. The main issue of the 0.9.1 release is to solve a few bugs but most importantly to make it compatible with a very large number of devices. Want to check out the working games? Developer NOMIOMI has posted a link on the dedicated XDA page for you to check out.

Slow – that is the word I would use to characterise the the development of PPSSPP – an app which besides everything is Open Source. Still the developer is constantly working on the app and also bringing portable consoles a step closer towards complete replacement. As for the changes brought by the latest version I’m going to post the list since there are so many of them:

    • Atrac3+ plugin no longer required! Thanks Maxim for hard reverse-engineering work
    • Many, many emulation fixes, including:
    • bezier/spline curve support, fixing Loco Roco and others
    • stencil clear emulation, fixing Final Fantasy IV text
    • Android-x86 support
    • Post-processing shaders like FXAA, scanlines, vignette
    • More solid save states (we will try to keep them working from now on. Save states only upgrade forward, not backward to older versions though)
    • Change render resolution independently of window size
    • Massive debugger improvements on Windows, by Kingcom and unknownbrackets (GE)
    • Win32 menu bar is now translatable. Language changes are applied instantly.
    • Win32: Ability to store PPSSPP’s config files and memory stick files in places other than the same directory
    • Qt audio fixed, Symbian audio and ffmpeg is now threaded for more consistent media processing
    • Haptic feedback support for mobile devices
    • Accurate system information for mobile devices
    • Analog controller support for Blackberry
    • Windows installer (coming soon)

Feeling in the mood for some good PSP titles. Then find the latest release on the Play Store. Just remember it’s not the final version.
