  • We couldn’t help playing Minecraft Story Mode, because everybody was talking about it and it became a “thing” fast. Coming from Telltale Games, we’d expect nothing more than a very fun title and we got exactly that, but not quite on par with previous titles from the same company.

Priced at 5 euros per episode and launched in mid October, Minecraft Story Mode was played by us on the OnePlus Two and takes up about 1 GB of space. It’s a blocky and childish adventure, with a beginning episode that feels a lot like The Lego Movie. It’s the typical story of losers turned heroes and what you have to do here is tap on dialog options, tap to fight, dodge and tap fast to build and combine objects.

You have to combine objects to forge a sword for example. Characters will remember your choices and change attitudes towards you and their decisions. The story goes like this: a group of friends and a pig go to a crafting competition called Endercon. On the way you’ll fight zombies, stand up to bullies in a pure teen drama and perform quick time events.

The main character is Jesse, who can be a man or woman, depending on your choice. He/she is a very upbeat person, that will put salt and pepper into the story. There’s a ton of inside jokes in this game, that only Minecraft fans will get. Surprisingly big name actors are doing the voicing here, including Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn to name just two.

Battles are a bit strange, almost laggy, but one strong feat of the game is certainly its soundtrack. While this game is fun and smartly done, it’s nowhere near as crazy laugh-inducing like Tales from the Borderlands, that was a masterpiece from Telltale. We give it a 9 out of 10 and you can get it here.
