  • Sophos has just announced the availability of the Sophos Mobile Security Android app, a lightweight and free antivirus application for Android. The software is very light on performance and battery life and with all the malware out there, you really need something like this to protect your device.

Juniper Networks and F-Secure are claiming that the growth rate in Android malware last year increased 155% over 2010, so the antivirus business for Android is not only necessary, but also imperative. Later this year Sophos will offer an Enterprise version of the Mobile Security app with extra functionality and corporate users as the target audience. It will protect corporate devices and data and probably feature encryption. The Sophos Mobile Security app is made by Sophos Limited and needs Android 2.2 or later to run. It takes up merely 2.1 MB, so it’s very lightweight.

It offers the option to scan apps as you install them, scan previously installed apps from your internal storage or SD card and also creates a gray list of apps that can pose a threat. Sophos Mobile Security offers a loss and theft protection function, performing a remote lock on any Android device that has been lost or stolen. Tracking technology is also involved here to find the device. Privacy protection and more will be included and all of that is available once you download the app from here.
