Star Skater Review (Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro): Funky Arcade Skating Title From Halfbrick (Video)

Last year brought a pretty impressive increase in the number of games that wanted to be just like Crossy Road, relying on 8 or 16 bit graphics and music, blocky characters and arcade gameplay. To that list we add Star Skater, that we reviewed in the video below.
We played the game on the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro tablet and you should know this is a free title from the famous game maker Halfbrick. They’re famous for making Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride. Star Skater was launched at the end of 2015 and it features 40 levels of downhill skating, on an 8 bit skateboard. All levels are time based and they include obstacles, like passing car or trucks, as well as walls.
If you bump into a wall and want to continue you can spend burritos for revives. Then there are the dollars, that will buy you new characters, wheels for your skateboard or new skates. There’s no clear concept of accelerating or decelerating here and it’s all in the turns. The controls involve pressing the right or left side of the screen to take a turn and change lanes.
Depending on how high or low you press, turns are more or less sharp and influence your direction and even the acceleration. The controls take a while to get used to and I would have gone with a single tap on the side and an accelerate and brake button, but that’s just me. It’s a casual title, with a nice 16 bit music, bite size levels and very fun arcade action.
Eventually you will get tired or bored of the same level concepts and move on to something else. We give this game a 7.5 out of 10 and you can download it here.
