Oddworld Stranger’s Wrath Review (Galaxy S6 Edge+): Must Play Classic From the Xbox Era, With Charismatic Characters (Video)

Oddworld Stranger’s Wrath is a classic from the Xbox age, a game that received tons of awards when it came out in 2005. Ten years later, it’s available on Android, priced at $3 and we played it on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+. The graphics look a little blurry, but the environment of play is quite vast, so we excused it for that aspect.
This is a very interesting combo of a few genres, that include FPS and TPS elements, as well as action adventure ones. It would seem impossible to map to a touchscreen so many commands, but somehow it has been done. You get lots of redneck humor, funny lines, a bit repetitive at times and unapologetic countryfolk, who burp, fart and drink their way into a sci-fi western with humanoid critters at the center.
You’re a bounty hunter who can punch or throw bugs at foes to trap them or kill them and get the rewards. Bugs are fired from a gun and can be used to stun enemies, trap them with a sort of spider web, distract them or just blow them away. There are multiple controls here, for the camera, punching, bashing, jumping and an universal interaction button, too.
Stranger, the main character can climb ropes, pull levers, open doors and fire at electric gears to activate mechanisms like gates. Boss battles and traps are available in Oddworld and apparently you can also adopt a stealthy approach, instead of going all out gungho on the enemies. You’re supposed to paralyze them and suck them into a special trap, like ghostbusters, then collect your coins and proceed.
Over 12 hours of content are available here, so this is one huge game. Graphics have their own settings, so maybe the blur I experience can be fixed if your device handles the tweaks. An interesting control method involves shaking the screen to get more life. There are so many bugs to collect and fire at enemies, that this becomes a game of its own.
This classic is a true console game gone mobile and it’s well worth a high grade of 9.6 out of 10. You can get it here.
