  • When we played with the LG Nexus 5X, we thought it would be a pity not to put this excellent phone through the throes of gaming. And so we did, messing about with Winterstate, a pretty interesting car combat and strategy game, that features a beautiful winter scenery. The game is available for free in the Play Store, which is quite surprising, given its quality.

You can fire missiles, use a machine gun and a variety of other weapons, each one depending on the type of vehicle you control. Graphics look quite nice and the winter chill went up to my bones, so winter was excellently rendered. You play in frozen USA and have to plan your route carefully, before sending vehicles to capture regions and fight other massive machines.

3D environments are featured here and cars are being directed by drawing their path on the ground. You can trade goods and the currencies are gems and gears. Of course, there are timers to face and cars need repairing, which may affect the gameplay and progress. You should always keep an eye on what car you’re sending out, since some are light scouts, others are armored rides, or artillery behemots.

Magnetic mines and air strikes are also available and special attacks are triggered when sitting on energy pads. You can activate shields if the going gets tough, zoom in to get a better view of the rides and upgrade your vehicles. This is quite a hard game, as I found out after playing about half a dozen missions, but it has huge potential once you get going and there’s a rhythm to the battles.

We give this game an 8.3 out of 10 and you can get it here.
